Why Your Google Business Profile Is the Most Important Thing for Your Small Business in Southwestern Ontario

Why your google business profile is so important

Let me ask you something.

When was the last time you looked something up in the Yellow Pages?

Yeah. Me neither.

These days, when someone in Ingersoll needs a plumber, or someone in Tillsonburg is looking for a dentist, or a homeowner in Strathroy wants a quote from a landscaper, they pull out their phone and search Google. It takes about four seconds. And the businesses that show up in those first few results, they get the call.

The businesses that don't show up? They don't even know they missed it.

That's the world we're living in right now. And if you own a small business in Southwestern Ontario, this matters a lot.

What Is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile (most people still call it Google My Business) is basically your business's listing on Google. It's what shows up when someone searches for your business by name, or when they search for a service near them.

You've seen it before. It's that box on the right side of Google when you search for a local business, the one with the photos, hours, phone number, reviews, and a map. Or it's one of those three listings that appears when you search "electrician near me" and Google shows you a map with three options underneath it.

That map section with three listings is called the local 3-pack. And if your business is showing up there, you are getting calls. If you're not, someone else is getting your calls.

It really is that simple.

Why Does It Matter So Much in SW Ontario?

Here's the thing about Southwestern Ontario, it's a region of small towns. Thamesford. Mitchell. Aylmer. Glencoe. Tavistock. New Hamburg. Most of these communities aren't huge. But every one of them has people searching Google every single day for local services.

And here's what I've noticed working with businesses in this area: most local businesses are not showing up in that local 3-pack. Their profile is either incomplete, outdated, has no reviews, or just doesn't have the right information to rank well.

That's actually good news for you, because it means the competition is wide open. You don't need to outrank a national company. You just need to outrank the three other businesses in your town who also haven't bothered to optimize their profile. That's very doable.

What Happens When Your Profile Isn't Optimized

Let me paint a picture of what happens when a potential customer can't find you easily.

Say someone moves to Komoka from out of town. They need a local plumber. They search "plumber Komoka" or "plumber near me." If your profile is incomplete or buried, they're going to call whoever shows up first. It's not personal — they just don't know you exist.

Or say someone in Dorchester is looking for a bookkeeper. They search Google, they see three options with reviews and photos and hours. You might be the best bookkeeper in the region, but if your profile has no reviews and the last post was two years ago, you look like a business that's barely open. They call someone else.

That's money walking out the door. And it happens every day.

Right now, an optimized GBP matters!

What "Optimized" Actually Means

When I say an optimized Google Business Profile, I mean a few specific things. None of them are complicated but most business owners just haven't done them because they're busy running their actual business.

Your basic information is complete and accurate. This means your name, address, phone number, website, and hours are all correct and consistent everywhere online. This sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many profiles have the wrong phone number, an old address, or hours that haven't been updated since before COVID.

You have the right categories selected. Google lets you choose what type of business you are. If you pick the wrong category, or if you only pick one when you should pick several, Google doesn't know when to show you. A heating and cooling company that only lists itself under "HVAC contractor" might miss searches for "air conditioning repair" or "furnace installation."

You have photos. Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks than profiles without. Real photos of your work, your team, your shop, they build trust before someone even calls you.

You have recent, positive reviews. Reviews are probably the single biggest ranking factor in local search. Google wants to show businesses that people trust. A business with 40 reviews and a 4.8-star rating is going to outrank a business with 2 reviews every time, even if the second business is actually better.

Your profile is active. Google rewards businesses that post updates, answer questions, and respond to reviews. An active profile signals to Google that your business is alive and engaged.

The Reviews Problem

Let me spend a minute on reviews because this is where most businesses fall down.

Getting reviews is awkward. Nobody likes asking for them. And customers, even happy ones, almost never leave a review on their own, not because they don't want to help you, but because they forget and life gets busy.

The businesses that have a lot of reviews aren't necessarily better than the ones that don't. They've just figured out how to ask consistently. Usually that means a follow-up text or email right after a job is done, while the customer is still happy and the experience is fresh.

There are ways to automate this so you never have to think about it. That's part of what I help businesses set up. But even if you do it manually even by just texting every customer after a job and ask them to leave a quick Google review, you'll start to see your profile climb in the rankings.

Google Business Optimization Matters

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

This is the question I get asked most. And the honest answer is: faster than you'd think.

Google Business Profile changes can show up in local search results within two to three weeks. A fully optimized profile with good categories, complete information, fresh photos, a handful of new reviews can move you noticeably in the rankings within 30 to 60 days.

That's not a guarantee, and results vary depending on how competitive your market is and what town you're in. A plumber in Stratford is going to have more competition than a plumber in Sebringville. But in most SW Ontario markets, the competition isn't that fierce yet. There's real opportunity here right now for businesses willing to put in the work.

Do I Need a Website Too?

Not to get started. Your Google Business Profile can drive calls and leads completely on its own, especially for service businesses where people want to call and get a quote.

A website helps and eventually you'll want one if you don't have it, but you don't need to wait for a website before you start working on your GBP. The profile itself is often the first thing people see anyway, and many of them call directly from there without ever visiting your website.

So Where Do You Start?

If you haven't already, go to business.google.com and claim your business profile. Google will send you a verification postcard or let you verify by phone. Once it's verified, start filling in everything — every section, every category, every detail.

Then get a photo on there. Then ask your last five happy customers for a review.

That's the starting point. It's not complicated, it's just time you probably don't have because you're running a business.

That's where I come in. I do all of this for local businesses across Oxford County, Middlesex County, Perth County, and the rest of SW Ontario — and I do it without you having to lift a finger. You focus on your business. I make sure Google knows you exist.

If you want to see exactly where your profile stands right now, I offer a free audit. No pitch, no pressure — just an honest look at what's working and what's holding you back.
